Epsilon EP Servo Drive

Featuring power, simplicity, and Ethernet options

The Epsilon EP is the newest “Motion Made Easy”™ servo drive from Control Techniques. The Epsilon EP is a compact easy to use servo drive that is scalable from a simple amplifier to a completely programmable 1.5 Axis motion controller.

The EP can be configured with fieldbus options and motion control capabilities to give you the best solution available at the lowest price. The Epsilon EP comes in four drive sizes, 2.2A, 4.0A, 6.5A, and 9A delivering over 100 lb-in of torque at the rated motor speed using XV motors.

Three functional Configurations

Base: Epsilon EP-B

The EP-B drive is ideal for servo applications utilizing an analog command signal and position feedback reference. The drive can be configured into five operating modes: Analog Torque, Analog Velocity; Preset Velocity; Pulse follower, or Analog Position. The EP-B has the unique capability of combining an analog command with a preset velocity to create a new command for trimming or advance/retard operations. The EP-B drive is an excellent choice for stepper replacements or low cost control systems.

Indexer: Epsilon EP-I or EP-IDN

The EP-I drive is a highly capable position controller that provides Home, Index, and Jog motion profiles. The EP-I holds up to 16 unique indexes that also can be chained together to create complex motion profiles. The powerful Homing function of the EP-I provides the ultimate in flexibility without sacrificing ease-of-use. Best of all, the EP-I has a unique alternate mode feature whereby the EP-I drive can perform an Index or Home function, and then switch to an alternate mode such as analog toque, analog velocity, or pulse follower mode on the fly! The EP-I can solve countless applications in this very compact cost effective package.

Programming: Epsilon EP-P

The EP-P drive provides the highest level of control by allowing the user to create complete user programs to sequence the motion control along with other machine functionality. The EP-P can be used to solve the most complex motion applications and still be easy-to-use because of the PowerTools Pro configuration software. PowerTools Pro uses simple drag-and-drop and fill in the blank screens that make setup a snap. User programs are created using a text based motion language that is as easy to read as it is to program. If you don't know the command, just drag it in from the drop down box and PowerTools Pro will assist you with the syntax. With intuitive software and plenty of online help, programming this servo drive is easy; in fact it is “Motion Made Easy!”

New Features with Epsilon EP

  • Position Tracker™
Position Tracker™ can replace a PLC-based position controller with a simple analog signal or fieldbus register, reducing cost and complexity. No complex ladder logic to send acceleration, velocity and position information, just predefine the maximum values of acceleration and velocity in PowerTools Pro software, then send the position information via analog input or over the network, and the drive will command the motor to that exact position.
  • Analog Position Control
Analog Position Control has been added to the EP-B for precise control of applications using linear motors or valve controllers, and for those seeking electrical replacement of pneumatic devices. The “teach” mode allows the machine to calibrate the drive for exacting analog positioning applications.
  • Digital I/O
The digital I/O has been enhanced by adding more I/O points and extra protection. The EP-P, EP-I, and EP-IDN now have 16 inputs and 8 outputs. The I/O is optically isolated, and outputs are short circuit protected. This increased protection is great for harsh industrial environments and prevents costly wiring mistakes.
  • Extra Power
The new Epsilon EP has up to 25 percent more power than the previous Epsilon series, within the same frame sizes.
  • Ethernet Programming
The EP-P drive uses standard Ethernet protocols for all levels of networking: To setup and monitor your application with PowerTools Pro software, communicate to PLC's via EtherNet/IP, or connect to an operator panel to display real-time variables via Modbus TCP/IP. You also can bring up a web page from a remote terminal to view the drive status, or trigger the drive to send you an e-mail.
  • DeviceNet
Device available on both Programming and Indexing models.
  • Profibus
    Coming Summer 2007.
  • PowerTools Pro
One tool to set up all the Epsilon EP drives. Intuitive and easy to use PowerTools Pro provides several flexible programming options that will have systems programmed in minutes or hours, rather than days or weeks. Best of all PowerTools Pro software is free!
  • Shunt Ready
For more demanding applications, the larger Epsilon EP drives are fitted with an internal transistor to control an external dynamic braking resistor (or shunt). Also available is a resistor package that mounts directly on the Epsilon EP heatsink for a cost-effective and space-saving solution.
